Why it matters

An LEI is how a counterparty proves it is who it says it is.

As RBI extends its LEI mandate across market participants, borrowers, and large-value payments, an increasing share of Indian entities need one to keep transacting.

01

Identify

A single 20-character code, unique to your entity, recognised across every financial system that uses the Global LEI standard.

02

Comply

Required for RBI-regulated market participation, large-value NEFT/RTGS payments, and specified categories of corporate borrowing.

03

Transact

Removes friction with banks and counterparties who now expect an LEI before clearing certain transactions.

Questions

Frequently asked

Who is legally required to hold an LEI in India?

Entities with aggregate bank exposure above ₹5 crore, participants in RBI-regulated markets, large-value NEFT/RTGS payers above ₹50 crore, and issuers of specified securities under SEBI rules. The scope has expanded under RBI's March 2026 master direction.

What happens if my LEI lapses?

A lapsed LEI is treated as invalid for regulated market participation. Banks may decline to process qualifying transactions until it is renewed.

Is an LEI issued in India valid internationally?

Yes. Every LEI is published to the single Global LEI Index maintained by GLEIF and is recognised in every jurisdiction using the standard, regardless of which accredited issuer processed it.

Can I transfer an existing LEI to Certus?

Yes. Your LEI code stays the same; only the managing registration record moves, with no interruption to validity.
